LAND-USE INTENSIFICATION TRENDS IN THE RIO DE LA PLATA REGION OF SOUTH AMERICA: TOWARD SPECIALIZATION OR RECOUPLING CROP AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 97-110 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2020380

Abstract: The Rio de la Plata region comprises central Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. Modern agriculture developed around 1900 with recent decades being characterized by the advance of cropping areas over native grasslands. Highly specialized agriculture has decoupled crop and livestock production but has succeeded in intensifying yields. However, significant losses of ecosystem services have been reported. Thus, questions have been raised on the sustainability of this pathway. A glance at world regions that have experienced similar trends suggests that an urgent course correction is needed. A major concern has been the lack of diversity in regions with highly specialized agriculture, promoting renewed interest in integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), not only because ICLS are more diverse than specialized systems, but also because they are rare examples of reconciliation between agroecosystem intensification and environmental quality. Consequently, this paper discusses alternatives to redesign multifunctional landscapes based on ICLS. Recent data provide evidence that recoupling crop and animal production increases the resilience of nutrient cycling functions and economic indicators to external stressors, enabling these systems to face climate-market uncertainty and reconcile food production with the provision of diverse ecosystem services. Finally, these concepts are exemplified in case studies where this perspective has been successfully applied.

Chaotic digital cryptosystem using serial peripheral interface protocol and its dsPIC implementation None

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2018, Volume 19, Issue 2,   Pages 165-179 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1601346

Abstract: The current massive use of digital communications demands a secure link by using an embedded system (ES) with data encryption at the protocol level. The serial peripheral interface (SPI) protocol is commonly used by manufacturers of ESs and integrated circuits for applications in areas such as wired and wireless communications. We present the design and experimental implementation of a chaotic encryption and decryption algorithm applied to the SPI communication protocol. The design of the chaotic encryption algorithm along with its counterpart in the decryption is based on the chaotic Hénon map and two methods for blur and permute (in combination with DNA sequences). The SPI protocol is configured in 16 bits to synchronize a transmitter and a receiver considering a symmetric key. Results are experimentally proved using two low-cost dsPIC microcontrollers as ESs. The SPI digital-to-analog converter is used to process, acquire, and reconstruct confidential messages based on its properties for digital signal processing. Finally, security of the cryptogram is proved by a statistical test. The digital processing capacity of the algorithm is validated by dsPIC microcontrollers.

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 13, Issue 2,   Pages 369-376 doi: 10.1007/s11705-018-1734-7

Abstract: A series of novel 6-( -butyl)-8-fluoro-2,3-dimethylquinoline carbonate derivatives were designed and synthesized. Bioassay results showed that some of them exhibited good activity against ( ). It was found that the compound (benzyl (6-( -butyl)-8-fluoro-2,3- dimethylquinolin-4-yl) carbonate) possessed good activity against whatever protective activity (10 mg·L ) or curative activity (25 mg·L ), which was better than that of control tebufloquin. In addition, the frontier molecular orbit results revealed that the compound held higher activity against when the total energy was low and the ClogP was high, which may provide useful information for further design novel fungicides.

Deciphering the Origins of P1-Induced Power Losses in Cu(Inx,Ga1–x)Se2 (CIGS) Modules Through Hyperspectral Luminescence Article

Engineering 2020, Volume 6, Issue 12,   Pages 1395-1402 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.12.019

Abstract:

In this report, we show that hyperspectral high-resolution photoluminescence mapping is a powerful tool for the selection and optimiz1ation of the laser ablation processes used for the patterning interconnections of subcells on Cu(Inx,Ga1-x)Se2 (CIGS) modules. In this way, we show that in-depth monitoring of material degradation in the vicinity of the ablation region and the identification of the underlying mechanisms can be accomplished. Specifically, by analyzing the standard P1 patterning line ablated before the CIGS deposition, we reveal an anomalous emission-quenching effect that follows the edge of the molybdenum groove underneath. We further rationalize the origins of this effect by comparing the topography of the P1 edge through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) cross-section, where a reduction of the photoemission cannot be explained by a thickness variation. We also investigate the laser-induced damage on P1 patterning lines performed after the deposition of CIGS. We then document, for the first time, the existence of a short-range damaged area, which is independent of the application of an optical aperture on the laser path. Our findings pave the way for a better understanding of P1-induced power losses and introduce new insights into the improvement of current strategies for industry-relevant module interconnection schemes.
